Last weekend, our team embarked on an unforgettable journey to this enchanting event, bringing with us a taste of the past through longbow archery, axe throwing, catapult castles, and our medieval-themed shop. Despite facing some initial setbacks (our van broke down on the M25!), the weekend turned out to be a roaring success, with over 4000 enthusiastic attendees joining us for a journey through the Middle Ages.

The adventure began with a twist of fate as our main van broke down en route to the festival grounds. It was a challenging start, but with quick thinking and a dash of determination, we managed to hire a van and swiftly hit the road once again. Though it put us behind schedule, our dedicated crew worked tirelessly to ensure that we were up and running in time to greet the eager festival-goers.
One of the highlights of our exhibit was the opportunity to experience longbow archery, a quintessential skill of medieval times. Here are some fascinating facts about longbow archery and its significance in history:

Weapon of War: The longbow was a formidable weapon on the medieval battlefield, renowned for its power and range. In skilled hands, it could penetrate armour from impressive distances, making it a game-changer in warfare.
English Legacy: Longbow archery is deeply ingrained in English history, particularly notable during the Hundred Years’ War between England and France. English longbowmen played a crucial role in decisive battles such as Agincourt, where their skill and precision turned the tide of war.

Training and Skill: Mastering the longbow required years of dedicated practice. In medieval England, laws were passed requiring men to practice archery regularly, ensuring a steady supply of proficient archers for military service.
Social Status: Longbow archery was not just a skill but a symbol of social status. Longbowmen were highly respected in society, and their prowess with the bow elevated their standing within their communities.
At the festival, participants of all ages had the opportunity to try their hand at longbow archery, experiencing firsthand the thrill of wielding this iconic weapon. Cheers of triumph filled the air as arrows found their mark, transporting both participants and spectators alike to the heart of medieval warfare.
In addition to longbow archery, our crew offered a range of other medieval activities, from the exhilarating challenge of axe throwing to the creative construction of catapult castles. Visitors could also browse through our medieval-themed shop, filled with an array of treasures reminiscent of times gone by.

Despite the initial hiccup, our experience at the Glastonbury Abbey Medieval Festival was nothing short of extraordinary. It was a weekend filled with laughter, excitement, and a deep appreciation for the rich tapestry of history that surrounds us. As the sun set on the final day of the festival, we couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to share our passion for the medieval era with thousands of enthusiastic adventurers.
As we packed up our wagons and bid farewell to the festival grounds, we carried with us memories of an unforgettable journey—a journey that reminded us of the enduring allure of the past and the timeless spirit of adventure that resides within us all. Until next time, may the echoes of medieval history continue to inspire and enchant us on our quest for new adventures.
